IMDb page

The drama follows an 12-year-old girl’s struggle to come to terms with her mother’s abandonment
—
12 year old Tara (AnnaSophia Robb) is forced to deal with her mother Jolene’s (Charlize Theron) failures and eventual abandonment. After unfortunate events, that seem to be a common occurrence, Jolene must turn to her brother James (Nick Stahl). She leaves Tara with James without warning. She leaves behind a letter with money, talk of a plan, and of potentially returning in a month.

Theron should have stayed as a producer and not acted in this. As a supporting character she’s too strong of an actress. She steals the scenes but the movie isn’t about her. I was still too focused on her even after her departure.

Stahl as James is quite the highlight. He’s simple but not stupid, and is very caring. His transformation around Tara is a gem in this movie.

One of the best scenes is representative of Tara’s growing maturity, awareness, and sexuality. She glides around a hotel pool on skates smoking a cigarette while 2 boys stare.

Tara and James have been on the way to James’ father’s farm. Mr. Reedy (Dennis Hopper) is expectedly abusive and bitter. This leads to a too predictable climax.

All in all not a bad film. Coming of age and personal growth can come at any age, and at any cost.

Gabriel (2007)

2/10 Pass

IMDb page

Gabriel tells the story of an archangel who fights to bring light back to purgatory - a place where darkness rules - and save the souls of the city’s inhabitants
—
I know this film is low budget. I know people seem to either love or hate this film. I just didn’t connect. At all. I couldn’t even finish the movie. It didn’t do a thing for me.

Funny Games (2007)

1.5/10 Pass

IMDb page

Two psychopathic young men take a family hostage in their cabin.
—
I’m about to hate on this movie. Fair warning.

I have 5 dogs, each with varying levels of neuroticism. I know each of my dog’s barks and when they’re barking just to bark or when they’re barking with meaning. This movie family’s dog barks in actual warning, barks strangely one last time, and then is never to bark again. I’d instantly be freaking out and highly suspicious of anyone I find on my property.

Now say you’ve just gone to investigate said odd behavior of your dog and you come across your wife trying to throw out 2 teenage boys, Paul (Michael Pitt) and Peter (Brady Corbett). Would you stand there questioning her? NO! You don’t stand there debating. You trust your partner. She obviously has a reason. Back her up. Ask questions later.

If your captor eventually shoots your child would you not even look at your kid? I would imagine a mother going into hysterics and at least crying or trying to pick up their child. Sure, Ann (Naomi Watts) is tied up, but she hops right past him and doesn’t even look at him. I don’t know, I’m not a mother. Everyone is different. That just didn’t seem very believable.

You’re then left alone. Your captors leave. Actually leave. You manage to free yourself from your bonds. Would you stick around trying to dry off your cell phone that was knocked into water earlier? I don’t know about you, but I’d get the heck out of there. Screw the phone. I’d be running to a neighbor’s.

Now here’s the crappiest part about this movie. The captors/killers can rewind time. Yeah, that’s right. If something doesn’t go their way they can actually rewind time. They use the tv remote. No, I’m not joking. That’s how bad this movie is. You’re going to die. You don’t stand a chance. If you get a chance it’ll just be rewound and undone. How pathetic is that?

I don’t care if this movie is “art”. I don’t care if this movie is supposed to make you think. I couldn’t empathize with any of the characters because almost none of them reacted the way a real person would.

A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story (2006)

8.5/10 Recommend

IMDb page

The true story of Gwen Araujo, a young transgendered woman who was brutally murdered by four men in 2002.
—
JD Pardo as Eddie/Gwen needs to be commended for his acting in this. Any transformation like that is hard to pull off. His mannerisms were amazing. Even the way he stood sometimes blew my mind.

I also need to praise Mercedes Ruehl for playing Gwen’s mother, Sylvia. Wow.

This movie isn’t perfect, but it definitely says something about acceptance, love, understanding, honesty, and bullying. Powerful messages and lessons any way you look at it.

Bootmen (2000)

4/10 Pass

IMDb page

Charismatic tap dancing Sean tries to find a way out of working at the steel mill. When failure brings him home he starts his own dance group wearing hardhats. He must then find inspiration in the steel mill he once tried to escape.
—
This is not like other dance movies. This deals with tap dancing, not street or hip hop. Everyone is still way too good looking. Also, this is in Australia.

Even with the different dance style covered this movie can easily be passed on. The brothers don’t look anything alike. It’s almost all I could think about the whole movie.

It’s interesting to see Sam Worthington way before Avatar. He’s younger, has hair, and his accent.

Brother Bear (2003)

8/10 Recommend

IMDb page

When a young Inuit hunter needlessly kills a bear, he is magically changed into a bear himself as punishment with a talkative cub being his only guide to changing back.
—
This is just good clean fun. I don’t know why I waited so long to watch this. Maybe I’m always skeptical that Disney can’t ever really top or add to the classics. This was quite enjoyable though. I don’t know how many times I’d want to watch it. There’s no sing-along score like the Lion King. But you can definitely recognize Tina Turner and Phil Collins in the soundtrack.

I particularly liked the moose characters. I found their over-the-top Canadian accents funny. They provided the most laughs for me. There was a little bit of an alcohol joke thrown in there that the kids would miss.

D.B.
IMDb page

A seemingly perfect family moves into a suburban neighborhood, but when it comes to the truth as to why they’re living there, they don’t exactly come clean with their neighbors.
—
I did not see that coming. I knew this family was different, but I didn’t expect why or how. It’s good to be surprised.

This movie started off strong. I was sitting there trying to catch every clue or hint that would help me figure out the secret behind this family. Once you know the secret you can pretty easily figure out how the story’ll end. It’s still good the whole way through though.

I am not a David Duchovny fan. He was good here though; more muted. Still funny, but much more normal. Everyone else is quite attractive. Demi Moore, Amber Heard, and Ben Hollingsworth make a good looking cast.

Soundtrack talk!
I noticed a few songs particularly. The music video that the kids talk about is “Sophisticated Side Ponytail” by Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head. I didn’t particularly like the song. It actually makes no sense. The video is… interesting. Thank goodness it’s short; it’s 1:32 long.
The songs I did like were:
“Yeah Yeah Yeah” by My Radio
“Play” by Stephen Fretwell
“This Too Shall Pass” by OK Go

Centurion (2010)

6/10 Recommend

IMDb page

A splinter group of Roman soldiers fight for their lives behind enemy lines after their legion is decimated in a devastating guerrilla attack.
—
You want a bit of suspense, action, and badassery. Some blood, some guts, some gore. And hey, the women are are all really good looking badasses too.

This movie isn’t completely unhistorically accurate. Of course every movie takes liberties. The Romans speak English with very English or Irish accents.

This is the kind of movie that spurs me to hours of internet searching and reading about the historical subject. I’d never heard of the Picts before. But now I’ll be reading up on that.

“The name the Picts called themselves is unknown. The Latin word Picti first occurs in a panegyric written by Eumenius in AD 297 and is taken to mean “painted or tattooed people” (Latin pingere “to paint”, pictus “painted”; Greek puktis “picture”). As Sally M. Foster noted, “Much ink has been spilt over what the ancient writers meant by Picts, but it seems to be a generic term for people living north of the Forth-Clyde isthmus who raided the Roman Empire.”

The Runaways (2010)

7.5/10 Recommend

IMDb page

A coming-of-age biopic about ’70s teenage band The Runaways
—
I’m going to be honest. I know practically nothing about The Runaways, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart), or Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning). I can only assume that this movie stayed decently true to real life. I think that’s a safe assumption.

The casting was good. Especially for the other members of The Runaways. But of course, in rock ‘n’ roll fashion, I can’t really remember their names off the top of my head. Which is exactly what fuels the break-up of most bands, including The Runaways.

Also along the vein of staying true, the costuming was darn good. Cherie’s sexy corset outfit was spot on. Some of the girls jumpsuits, also straight out of the past. My favorite was Jett’s leather jacket. Hmmm I’m envious.

I should probably also mention that Stewert can actually act. Please remember that this movie is not part of the Twilight saga. Give it a chance.

Minority Report (2002)

8/10 Recommend

IMDb page

In the future, criminals are caught before the crimes they commit, but one of the officers in the special unit is accused of one such crime and sets out to prove his innocence
—
Sci fi, it can be pretty awesome.

For coming out in 2002 this movie looks like it could almost come out now. It’s not a perfect movie, but it’s really good.

This is one of those movies people analyze. They look for issue or plot holes. I don’t think there were any.

The biggest suggested plot hole is how Anderton (Tom Cruise) wouldn’t have gone looking for Crow (Mike Binder) if he hadn’t seen the report.
False.
Lamar Burgess (Max von Sydow) premeditated the murder. The pre-cogs saw the result of his planning, not Anderton’s. This is why the ball came out brown, not red.

Tricky movie, but deeper than people think.

To Save a Life (2009)

8/10 Recommend

IMDb page

After a childhood friend’s death, Jake Taylor, an all-star athlete must change his life - and sacrifice his dreams to save the lives of others.
—
This movie is going to hit hard. If you don’t related to at least one character then you’ve probably never been alive.

Serious issues are tackled, and presented well. Nothing seems forced or phoney. The acting is good. Everything is well paced.

I guess this gets labeled as a “Christian” movie, and I can see why. But it’s way more than that. If you’re worried about the religion in the movie, don’t be. There’s nothing preachy. No one shoves religion onto anyone else. Everyone is portrayed as real people making real mistakes. Everyone is just trying to make it through life.

This movie’s going to make you stop and think. To contemplate your morality, kindness, perhaps how to be unselfish. It doesn’t matter how old you are. People deal with bullying, anger, confusion, peer pressure, and suicide at all ages.

Just take a moment to think about how your treat others. What you do and say does affect those around you. Even the ones you haven’t even noticed before.

The Bounty Hunter (2010)

3.5/10 Pass

IMDb page

A bounty hunter learns that his next target is his ex-wife, a reporter working on a murder cover-up. Soon after their reunion, the always-at-odds duo find themselves on a run-for-their-lives adventure.
—
Only decent parts of this movie were parts played by Christine Baranski, Jason Sudeikis, and Siobhan Fallon. Unfortunately, even all their scenes combined don’t add up enough to make this movie worthwhile.

I barely chuckled and it was almost painfully predictable.

Jennifer Aniston does have a really nice body and Gerard Butler looks even better when he’s running though.

I also need to mention that I was a bit indignant that Cage the Elephant and Teddybears were debased by having to be on the same soundtrack as the likes of Ke$ha. Seriously? Ew

Empty (2011)

.5/10 Pass

IMDb page

A suspenseful drama about a young couple on a road trip who get caught in the midst of a worldwide gas shortage
—
Yes, that .5 star is correct. The world runs out of gas. An early 20-something aged couple must navigate society breaking down after they come back from a camping trip. There’s potential for a good story. Key word: potential.

Suspenseful? That must be a joke. The only suspenseful thing was waiting, and hoping for the couple to be bludgeoned to death for the rest of the gas in their car.

I couldn’t even stomach watching the whole film without skipping ahead. I couldn’t watch two people fight and whine so much. I don’t remember any conversation that didn’t have bickering and negativity in it. If one of them had a good idea the other one wouldn’t go along. They’d end up somewhere stupid doing something idiotic.

As of writing this, 101 out of 357 people have given this a rating of 1. Anyone else must have been drunk while watching this, drunk at the time of rating and misclicked, or related to a member of the cast or crew.

Going the Distance (2010)

7/10 Recommend

IMDb page

A romantic comedy centered on a guy and a gal who try to keep their love alive as they shuttle back and forth between New York and San Francisco to see one another.
—
I think I have a lot to say about this movie, so bear with me.

I’d say this movie is usually classified as a rom-com, but it got an R rating. To me it didn’t really feel like a typical rom-com. It was a bit more real. It had sarcasm, swearing, sex, and a real obstacle. An obstacle that could happen to anyone. Distance.

If you’ve ever been in a long distance relationship, you know what this movie is going to tackle. Except, it’ll probably be funnier in the movie. Phone sex that can turn awkward. The evil green eyed monster, jealousy. Your friends planting even more doubt in your ear. Constant longing and missing each other, which leads to anger and frustration. Oh, and not to mention expensive plane tickets.

I thought this movie was pretty darn funny at times. And when it wasn’t funny? It wasn’t boring! The middle didn’t drag. All the funny material wasn’t only in the first 20 minutes.

Now for a couple things that I can vividly remember and have a problem with.
1. If you go home with a guy after just meeting him, it will probably not lead to a loving relationship. That just doesn’t really happen. If it does, it’s rare. So, don’t expect that in real life.
2. If you’re smoking, clear the bong! I sat there outraged that they left so much smoke in the bong while not even covering it. I had to sit there watching it escape. I don’t even smoke and I was still agape at the idiocy of someone being portrayed as a smoker doing that.

What did I like about this movie?
1. Erin’s (Drew Barrymore) real girl persona. She drank beer, ate food (and it got messy), was sarcastic, was blunt, and she kept a good wardrobe.
2. Speaking of Erin’s wardrobe. Wow. Some of the outfits were really great. Like, actually wearable. I rarely say that about movie fashion. Some of the pants were a little weird. But a lot of her tops were quite good.
3. Garrett’s humor (Justin Long). Actually, this includes his friends Dan (Charlie Day) and Box (Jason Sudeikis) too. The bromance between the 3 of them was where a lot of the humor came from I think.
4. The soundtrack. Movies with good soundtracks are instantly better. In fact, I’m pretty much done with this review now because I want to go find the soundtrack.
5. One last thing, Brianna (Kelli Garner) has quite a nice rear.

Eastern Promises (2007)

7.5/10 Recommend

IMDb page

A Russian teenager living in London who dies during childbirth leaves clues to a midwife in her journal that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family.
—
I can tell I’m going to drop some spoilers in this one. If you haven’t watched this movie yet, stop reading!

Does Viggo Mortensen ever not play a bit of a badass? His character, Nikolai managed to traverse everything. He’s an undercover cop trying to take over part of the Russian mob in London. He wins a fight, barehanded and naked, against two guys! That was a good fight scene. I think one of the best fight scenes I’ve seen in a while. Sure, he takes down two guys, but he still gets hurt in the process. He wasn’t some perfect unrealistic ninja.

This movie would be great for a drinking game. If you drink every time you see someone drinking you’d either be dead, or hospitalized for alcohol poisoning at the very least. I swear, almost every scene someone was guzzling alcohol. Mostly vodka. I guess, you know, Russians like their vodka.

What did I learn from this movie? Never trust kindly old men. They turn out to be the mob boss.

Chapter 27 (2007)

7/10 Recommend

IMDb page

A film about Mark David Chapman in the days leading up to the infamous murder of Beatle John Lennon
—
This movie is definitely uncomfortable to watch. You know what’s going to happen. So, you watch the awkward and unstable Chapman (Jared Leto) slowly fall apart until he finally shoots John Lennon.

As a Beatles fan this movie was heartbreaking. The whole thing is truly tragic.

I’m not sure how most people view Jared Leto. Perhaps as mostly just a pretty face? I think he’s actually pretty talented. I think he can act. He’s certainly willing to dedicate himself to a role. Not to mention he’s part of a successful band.

There’s some interesting trivia that goes along with this movie too. I think the most commonly known is that Jared Leto gained 67 lbs for his role. But the one that I found interesting is:
“The name of the actor who plays John Lennon, ‘Mark Lindsay Chapman’, is similar to that of Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman.”

A Dog Year (2009)

7.5/10 Recommend

IMDb page

A guy suffering from a midlife crisis takes in a dog that’s crazier than he is.

—
I love animals. I love dogs. I love movies about animals and/or dogs.

I liked this movie. I laughed. I cried. I watched it with my best friend, my dog, Clara.

Has this subject been done before? Yes.

Is Jeff Bridges awesome, pulls off this theme, and gives it a good reboot? Yes.

Now for one of my little quirks. I LOVE watching people do accents. Domhnall Gleeson is Irish. I know him best as Bill Weasley from the Harry Potter films. You know, his real father played Mad-Eye Moody. So, he does an American accent in this film. What do I do? That’s right, I try to see if i can pick up on his Irish accent at all while he’s talking. I caught it once, maybe twice.

Afterschool (2008)

2/10 Pass

An Internet-addicted prep-school student captures on video camera the drug overdose of two girls.
—
Looking at Ezra Miller’s cute face got this movie 2 stars from me.

This movie takes itself way too seriously. It took a serious topic and made it completely bland.

The only interesting thing about this movie is the trivia page on IMDb:

“In one of the early scenes in Rob’s dorm room, a poster on the wall near the door says “DO YOU FEEL - new album.” This poster is for an album by the popular alternative one-man music project headed by pop-rocker Bryce Avary known as The Rocket Summer. “Do You Feel” was The Rocket Summer’s third full-length album and was released in 2007.”

The Crazies (2010)

7.5/10 Recommend

IMDb page

About the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply.
—
This movie had me freaked out! I rarely jump or scream during a “scary” movie. Usually I’m the one laughing while trying to figure out who’s going to die. But this movie was too real. I could see the US government trying to cover up a bio weapon leak. I could relate to too many of the characters.

Characters:
The very aware, protective sherif with common sense
The slightly gung-ho but fiercely loyal deputy
The pregnant wife
The teenager in love

Other stuff that adds up to an action packed movie:
Small town
…With good folk and a few “rednecks”
Zombie like humans
Conspiracy theory
Mindfuckery
Gore
Relationships that keep you rooting for the main characters
Wicked explosions

While all that may make this movie sound like it’d be a B-list movie, it’s not. This was full on with good effects and acting.

I’d recommend this.

Silk (2007)

4/10 Pass

IMDb page

The story of a married silkworm merchant-turned-smuggler in 19th century France travels to Japan for his town’s supply of silkworms. During his stay in Japan, he becomes obsessed with the concubine of a local baron.
—
Gosh, Michael Pitt sure can be dull to watch. He played Hervé Joncour, who just looked a bit lost the whole movie. Maybe that was the point? Everyone around him seemed to have passion. He just seemed… infatuated. Lustful. Can’t really blame him. The Girl, played by Sei Ashina is gorgeous.

Perhaps someone can explain why a Japanese actress was playing a Chinese woman who was a concubine in Japan. Or why a movie with French characters have American and English actors and accents.

I’m an odd one. I like minor characters sometimes more than the main ones. I really liked watching Ludovic Berbek grow up. Pretty sure he had a crush on Joncour’s wife Hélène, played by Keira Knightley.

I have to mention the backdrop and landscape saved this movie for me. Fantastic.

Anyway, happy 23rd birthday to Mark Rendall who played the grown up Berbek.

In summary, maybe skip the movie and read the book it’s based on. Books are always better.
