Gosh, Michael Pitt sure can be dull to watch. He played Hervé Joncour, who just looked a bit lost the whole movie. Maybe that was the point? Everyone around him seemed to have passion. He just seemed… infatuated. Lustful. Can’t really blame him. The Girl, played by Sei Ashina is gorgeous.
Perhaps someone can explain why a Japanese actress was playing a Chinese woman who was a concubine in Japan. Or why a movie with French characters have American and English actors and accents.
I’m an odd one. I like minor characters sometimes more than the main ones. I really liked watching Ludovic Berbek grow up. Pretty sure he had a crush on Joncour’s wife Hélène, played by Keira Knightley.
I have to mention the backdrop and landscape saved this movie for me. Fantastic.
Anyway, happy 23rd birthday to Mark Rendall who played the grown up Berbek.
In summary, maybe skip the movie and read the book it’s based on. Books are always better.
